Parkworks Automation - Felix Apartments

Industrial and engineering photography documenting a semi-automatic lift-and-slide parking system at Felix, a 168-unit apartment community in downtown Santa Rosa

Parkworks automated parking system, Felix Apartments Santa Rosa: cars on the lower platforms with the upper pallets raised, daylight from the garage glazing

Project Overview

This was a standard documentation shoot of a finished system, my fourth garage for Parkworks Mechanical Systems. Felix is a 168-unit apartment community at 420 Mendocino Avenue in downtown Santa Rosa, developed by Related California and designed by David Baker Architects. Parkworks built a semi-automatic lift-and-slide system, platforms three high and three deep, that holds 96 cars in a small garage footprint, with EV charging integrated into the stalls. It was the first system of its kind in Sonoma County, and the building has earned LEED Gold certification.

This is a ground level garage with openings to outside light, the best kind for lighting, so I could mix natural light with strobes. There was enough outside light in this part of the garage to forego the strobes for the headlights shot. A Parkworks employee had her car washed for the shoot, drove it onto the platform, and I shot five-shot brackets and a single exposure of just the outdoor scene. In the final composite I made the outside brighter and a bit overexposed to make it feel more realistic, and not like a pulled real estate interior where the outside looks fake. I used strobes for fill, and for texture on the control panel shots.

Creative Process

Placement
I chose an area of the garage next to the outdoor openings. A ground level garage is the best kind for lighting, because I can mix natural light with strobes.
The Headlights
I decided to use car lights, something I did at Hunters View with the tail lights. Here I did it with the headlights, in the banner image for the project. Five-shot brackets with the car on the platform, one exposure of just the outdoor scene, and a composite that keeps the outside bright.
A Landscape Approach
Something I brought to this shoot for the first time was a landscape approach. After the first three, including Brittan and Hunters View, this fourth one at Felix struck me as similar to shooting in a forest: light trickling down from far above, concrete like rocky surfaces, the walls like trees, specks of bright light coming in from outside and light streaming down from the yellow lights above, much like sun through tree canopies. It is the same low-light shade and then super bright specks throughout if there is direct sun, the same extreme exposure outside against the low light of a forest floor. So I thought about how this could be a landscape, or a mix of landscape and space.
Detail Frames
Strobes for texture on the control panels and the drive hardware: the lift beam, the chain and the locking gear that hold a car in the air. Straight lines kept straight, the way architectural interiors are shot, so the system reads as engineering.
